Analysis & Observations on Cutting 4mm Genuine Leather

Effective Cutting Across Multiple Passes:
  • Pass 1: Single-pass cutting with power levels of 60%-100% at speeds of 5–10 mm/s showed partial penetration but required additional passes for full cuts. These settings performed well for outlining and initial scoring.
  • Pass 2: Two passes at the same power and speed settings achieved cleaner cuts, particularly with 70%-90% power at 5 mm/s. Slight edge burn was noticeable, but it remained manageable.
  • Pass 3: Full penetration was consistently achieved with three passes, especially at 70%-100% power and 5–10 mm/s speeds. These combinations resulted in clean edges with minor charring, making them suitable for precision cutting of thicker leather pieces.
Overburn & Excessive Charring:

Using 100% power and very slow speeds (5 mm/s) during all three passes caused significant edge charring and burning, leading to rougher edges. These settings are best avoided unless a rustic or heavily marked effect is desired.

Shallow Cuts on Higher Speeds:

Speeds of 25–50 mm/s produced incomplete cuts even after three passes, particularly with lower power levels (20%-50%). These settings are more suitable for light scoring or decorative surface cuts rather than full material penetration.

Air Assist Impact:

The use of 5 PSI air assist minimized smoke buildup and helped maintain cutting clarity by blowing away debris during the process. This resulted in cleaner edges and less discoloration.

Line Interval and DPI:

The 0.004-inch (0.1mm) line interval and 254 DPI setting ensured sharp and consistent cuts, highlighting the Monport Onyx’s ability to produce precise results on leather.

  • Power: 70%-90%
  • Speed: 5–10 mm/s
  • Passes: 3 for full penetration
  • Line Interval: 0.004 inches (0.1mm)
  • DPI: 254
  • Air Assist: 5 PSI
  • Frequency: 20 kHz

These settings strike the right balance, ensuring clean cuts while minimizing charring and achieving consistent results across thicker leather projects.
